Having previously worked with the voluntary organisation RELAYS (Regional Educational Legacy in Arts and Youth Sport) we were asked to work with them to film and produce a series of short videos recording the Sport activities organised for the ‘Free Your Fitness’ project.

Sports Edge Video Productions

‘Free You Fitness’ project is a Lottery funded project to enable Bournemouth University and Arts University Bournemouth students to get involved in a Sport. The videos would be used by sportBU for presentations to Sport England and would also be used by BU Sports Management students in their final year projects.

Objectives and Approach.

I worked in a team with Aleksandra Leontyeva for this module, with each of us working  in clearly defined roles, although these could and have been interchangeable as required, but in the main my personal key responsibilities have been first the capture of the visuals and then the editing and post production.

In addition to my key responsibilities I have also been involved in the marketing of our work on the Internet. One of my ideas was to create a separate website dedicated to showcase the videos we have produced to help promote our YouTube Channel and in particular with the aim of improving our listing position in the Google search results.

This project can be broken down into three parts.

  • Part one was to work with an external client, in this case SportBU to produce videos from the Sports Activities organised for the “Free Your Fitness” project for their presentation to Sport England and the project stakeholders.
  • Part Two was the creation of a YouTube Channel for the submission of our work for this unit and to showcase our work to the general public.
  • Part Three involved the marketing of the videos and the YouTube Channel using Social Networks including Facebook and Twitter.

Pre-production, organisation and planning

After three years at University, Aleksandra and myself have acquired excellent film making skills, the experience we have gained from working on many Film projects mean that we are very well organised as a team. We quickly created a detailed plan for each of the sport activities we intended to film, allocated time for editing and methods for delivering the content to the client. Including saving to memory sticks and uploading to the YouTube Channel, which we created specifically for this project and titled Sports Edge Video Productions.


We set ourselves three key deadlines:-

  1. The first was to deliver a range of sports videos for a group of Sports Management Bournemouth University students to use in their final projects by the end of February but this was rescheduled by the students to March.
  2. The second deadline was to deliver video content suitable for sportBU to use for the Sport England presentation scheduled for Friday 19th April 2013.
  3. The final deadline was for our personal hand in and critique for May 2nd 2013, which would include the content created for the YouTube Channel and of the marketing of the channel/videos using Social Networks.

I’ve created individual Blog entries for each of the filming sessions and what we did for each sport in order to film and decide on editing choices, but in general we split the filming duties.

For example I tended to concentrate on capturing the sports action and look for opportunities to use new camera angles including the use of the GoPro to create an alternative perspective POV. Aleksandra complimented this by filming close ups and the social aspect of the sport. However we swapped roles as necessary to make sure that we captured as much footage as we could. One of the key points we learned when filming live sports is that you have to be in the right place at the right time to get the shot and there’s little opportunity to re-shoot.

Pre-production – Time Management and Project Management

For time management in particular we made use of Social Networks by creating Facebook Events for each of the filming sessions, which reminded us when we were online what, where and when we had to be to film.

EMP EventsTime Management – ‘It’s about being organised, having a plan and sticking to it’ using Facebooks Events service was the perfect solution for organising/planning filming sessions at multiple venues over a period of weeks/months.

I started off by using an online Gantter Chart for project planning, which can be shared with other team members as I’ve used for my previous projects and then added Facebook Events, which turned out to be much more successful for planning the Filming sessions and organising as I’ve already mentioned what we needed to do, at what location and when. Athletics Track - On Your MarksBetween filming sessions we allocated editing time immediately after each event so that we would have videos completed at each stage of the project, which could then be presented to the client who we arranged to meet with on several occasions during the project. At  these meetings we also agreed any changes in the order of the events, the dates/times and at the same time the client may have asked us for something specific to be included in our videos. This for example could have included getting video of the organising staff or photographs/screengrabs for presentations.

Pre-production Planning – Storyboards and Shot Lists

In the early stages of this project I started off creating detailed storyboards (Slide shows for an example click here) and shots lists in the usual manner as for any previous short film project, an example of which was the detailed shot list and outline I created for the Boxing session, which can be found in this Blog post click here.

Following a tutorial with Liam I was advised to instead film the sports without a preconceived plan or detailed shot shot and be more spontaneous and adaptable to events as they unfolded. The idea behind this was that as I have on many previous projects carry out intensive planning and I tend to like to control all aspects of a production and in live sports this is just not possible. With this in mind for the majority of sports activities we filmed there was a basic outline of what we were looking for, an idea of the type of shots we wanted for example I wanted shots of the surfers taken into the Sun, so I made sure that I got those but other than these generalities I kept an open mind and just recorded as much footage as possible with as much variation in shots as possible.

Post Production

I created several edits for each of the sports activities that we filmed giving each of them a unique quality. For some I focused on the visual qualities, the narrative or for some it was the soundtrack that was important to the final edit. In all, between us we created 35 videos for sports including:- Surfing, Volleyball, Track Cycling, Golf, Athletics and Judo.

Some of the experimentation was created in Camera, by this I mean I selected a picture style (see this Blog post for  details click here) or a method of moving the camera that was new to me.  I experimented with Lens Whacking a method where the lens is removed from the camera mount and by changing the angle/focal plane you can change/introduce exposure changes while at the same time moving the focus point. I also tried several new camera angles and shot the majority of the footage handheld intentionally using a camera rig, details of which can be found in this dedicated Blog post click here.

I also used several post production techniques to simulate camera movements which could not be created at the time of filming, for example using scaling to simulate a zoom in or out, or to key in a tracking movement in Premiere Pro to simulate the use of a camera slide/dolly movement. I would combine several video transformations to stablelise an image or to follow or centralise the movement of the action on screen. A good example of this is tracking the cyclists as they cycled around the Velodrome, even though I tried my best to follow the movement as steadily as possible using the camera handheld it was still very difficult to keep the cyclist central in the frame. I solved this issue in post production by keying in horizontal and vertical points to help centralise the cyclist in the centre of the screen. In most cases I limited my modifications in post production to those that enhance the quality of or the movement of the image rather than to add special effects just for the sake of adding them, but they do have their place and I’m happy to have made use of them when required. Certainly my knowledge and skills with Premiere Pro and After Effects have grown even in the last few months working on this project working on the editing of over 30 videos for the YouTube Channel.

GolfCreativity in Post Production – ‘Using Video Transformations and Colour Grading to add interest’ – changing the duration of the video clips – speeding them up or slowing them down.

My video edits are colour graded or use an effect to add interest to the visuals, one example would be the Girls Cycling Event (for Blog post click here) where I layered videos changing opacity and blending modes to create the visual effects. I also used After Effects to colour tone and create a Triptych effect, which can be seen in the video below.

I also made the decision to create Movie style Trailers using iMovies, I’ve not used this editing program much over the last 3 years but I decided to make use of it in this project to create these short trailers. The reason behind this was introduce a different style to some of the edits, it’s very quick to use and the results can be very effective when for example you want to make an impact from just a few video clips. The feedback on these edits was mixed but generally most people liked them. In fact one of my recent iMovie trailers is getting a hit rate of 2 to 1 compared to any other edit.

Music and Soundtrack

I’ve used music that is Royalty Free or Creative Commons adding artist information in the end credits when required. This means that the videos can be monetised on YouTube without any limitations. The soundtrack for the Golf edit is particularly interesting as I created this from the sounds made as the golf club hits the ball, changing the pitch by changing the video speed and editing clips together to create a soundtrack. Effects & Post Production Examples

Cycling – Narrative Example

I created this video to show the build up to the start of a cycle race, beginning with showing the details of the cycles, the riders and the coach’s last minute talk to the riders. Then it’s the race itself, three riders racing around the track, one drops out after a few laps leaving just two to battle to the end. Then finally just the one rider crossing the finish line. This is really a difficult story to tell when there are only three riders on the day but I think it works well.

Cycling Triptych – Editing Technique

This video I think personally works well however I would like to make another version of this at some point which does not use the current visuals in the left panel. Possibly replacing them with some new footage of a group of cyclists chasing a leading cyclist. But the numbers were not available on the day of filming so I will have to go back and shoot some more footage in the Summer. Surfing – Narrative Example

I created this video to show the build up, the emotions and anticipation of the students as they exercise and are taught the guidelines before carrying their boards to the edge of the sea for many what would be their first time Surfing. I ended the video at the surfs edge as this ties in nicely with the opening ident sequence, which if you notice is virtually identical as this was scene from where the photograph was taken that we used to create the ident.

I also wanted to include some of the visual styles that I had identified in my research for this project in this surfing video, which in some ways had also influenced some of my camera work, which again came from my research for this unit click here for details. My research included the Guinness Advert ‘Horse Surfer’. In this video you will notice some of the similarities, the use of monochrome and music choice. I did think about adding a narration but in the end I felt the video worked on it’s own with just the music soundtrack.

Video Idents

We decided that as we were creating a YouTube Channel that we would design our own ident and use this for the opening for all newly created video edits. I created a selection of idents in After Effects using screengrabs from the Surfing Videos. Some were over elaborate in their design and in the end the final version was almost the simplest that I had designed. It was based on a photograph, which I modified in Photoshop first to create a silhouette effect and some colour tone changes and then processed again in Lightroom 4.3, which I have described in detail in this dedicated Blog post, which includes the research we carried out before picking this final design click here. Cycling-1-19Aleksandra agreed to concentrate more on the Branding and Marketing side of our project and so in many cases I deferred to what she said would work for the best for our project while I concentrated on the physical design, which as I mentioned was created using a range of applications including Photoshop, Lightroom and After Effects.

Creating the YouTube Channel

Sports edge Video Productions YouTube ChannelWe decided early on in this project to create a YouTube Channel to which we could both upload our videos and that also had the benefit of providing the client/clients a single online resource for their projects and presentations. For example one of the clients planned to embed the YouTube video links into a Powerpoint presentation and having them all in one place made it much more easier for them to achieve this. Creating a YouTube Channel is very easy all you need to do is open an account with a valid email account. However more recently the channel setup has been changed to allow for customisation, which includes header images, colour choices/backgrounds and some layout design controls.

I’ve made changes to our channel over time in particular to include playlists. The idea behind playlists is that you can set them up to automatically play each video automatically in sequence. This has the benefit of increasing video views for chances are if a viewer likes the first video they see they may carry on viewing the next video in sequence adding to the view counts for all videos in the playlist. I also went back through our videos to add annotations, adding links to Subscribe embedded at the end of the videos.

I also created a YouTube Channel widget which allows you to embed the channel and play videos directly within the widget, I’ve added this to all the pages on this Blog in anticipation that this will also increase views for out videos.   • YouTube Channel

Another benefit to using a YouTube Channel is that this provides the client and audience an easy way to view and share the video footage we have created. The other option we had was to produce the content for delivery on DVD but this had its own problems as the client was not certain that all venues had access to DVD players. Fortunately the majority of the venues were expected to Internet access and those that did not had computer facilities (Laptop) that could support playback of the videos from a USB memory stick. With this in mind we also copied our videos onto a memory stick as a back up to the YouTube Channel and supplied this to the client for their presentations.

My responsibilities initially was for video creation rather than marketing and promotion but I decided in the latter stages of the project that a website would be a useful addition to our marketing processes. So I decided to create a website to showcase some of our videos and create links back to our Facebook Pages and YouTube Channel. As I am the most skilled at website design this job fell to me and so I created this website using a customised WordPress installation on my personal server. The website has no pages just Blog postings and it makes use of SEO scripts to generate web traffic through the use of keywords, which makes it easier for Google search robots to find and index our videos.

Ethical, Social & Cultural IssuesCycling-1-27

As we were generally filming students who had been asked and had given us permission to film many of the potential issues for example how we portrayed people on screen were resolved at the beginning of the project. That is not say that we did not also take into consideration how people would be portrayed in our videos for example we would not use the footage produced to embarrass or denigrate those people on screen.

We did however cancel the filming of the Boxing when we learned that minors would be present as would youths who were participating as part of a rehabilitation program. Although permission could be granted to film these groups we felt that it would not add to the project and may cause future issues. For example minors filmed boxing and uploaded onto YouTube could have created major issues based on the public interpretation of what they were viewing and indeed for some moral issues may have raised.

Both genders were equally represented in our work, the Sports Activities were open to all participants regardless of gender, age and race and our work clearly shows this aspect. In fact our work helps to promote the idea of sports for all.

Final Thoughts and Project Evaluation at the Projects Conclusion

After a stumbling start to this unit with several filming/sports sessions cancelled for a number of sporting events, usually at the last minute mainly due to poor weather and also by low participant numbers, we soon got back on track, following the pre-production project planning and filming everything that we wanted to film. However with a caveat in that, it was a little bit unexpected and certainly when considering the subject, Sports activities at this level is basically just not that exciting.

Cycling-1-5Being Creative – Filming first time Sports participants is just not that exciting so we looked for the underlying narrative or created a unique selling point in our videos in post production.

I’m certain that if we were filming sport professionals or even experienced amateurs the action on screen would have been so much more interesting. But the team worked around this as much as we could, by making low participant numbers, low speeds and low activity levels appear interesting if not exciting on screen through our creativity.

Free Your Fitness project – enabling Bournemouth Students to participate in Sports

It has been a positive learning process I personally have a better feel for filming live action sequences in general and a clearer idea of what now makes for good Sports footage. I’ve also used the Sports footage to convey different meanings, one example would be one of the JUDO videos, which feels more like a dance video than a Sports video.

I’m generally happy with what we’ve produced for this project. The client was pleased with the videos that we produced and has passed back to us their positive feedback having used the videos in their presentations and a successful meeting with Sport England. We have gone onto to produce more video edits for the client to use in their ongoing presentations to future stakeholders in the project, which continues into 2014.

In the final weeks of the project created a series of videos for entertainment purposes with the idea that it may attract viewers not specifically interested in Sports genre videos. I suspect we were our most creative while making these videos and the client agreed, for example asking me to put back into early videos the trips and the falls.

What would I do differently? I think in the circumstances we did a reasonably good and professional job given the limitations, but when I do this type of filming again I’d prefer to start work in the Summer months, when participant numbers would be higher. I’d also aim for a higher level of ability in the participants, who were more skilled at their sport and therefore performing at a higher level.

  3. After each event time was allocated for editing/post production in order that a completed video was available in just a few short days after filming.
  4. We delivered the completed videos to the Sports Management students by the dues date and met the deadline for the sportBU presentation to Sport England.

  1. Our videos were in the main was targeting an audience of Sports Professionals and their requirements were met by our earlier video presentations which we delivered through our YouTube Channel and also copied onto USB memory for insertion into presentations.
  2. We also linked to our videos from within their private Facebook Group ‘Free Your Fitness’ Filming & Consultancy’ which allowed them to distribute this information to the Groups members.
  3. In the latter parts of the project we widened our audience by experiemtning with different themes to create interest through entertainment with the aim of reaching a non specialist audience for our videos. We delivered this through our YouTube Channel, picking titles and genre which would appeal to a wider audience.

  1. One of the biggest issues was resolved at the outset by getting full permissions in place so that we could effectively control the video content and distribute as required.
  2. We were careful not to use any copyrighted material including soundtracks/music in our videos.
  3. We made sure that everyone who appeared in our videos was treated with respect and fairly.
  4. We actively refrained from filming the planned Boxing sessions when we were made aware that minors would be present and people involved in a rehabilitation program.

EMP – Post Production Video Editing (Choices)

One of my favourite video edits for this project and why?

Why is this Cycling video one of my favourite edits? There are many reasons but taken collectively this edit combines the hard work of filming on location in the difficult position of not having little if any control over the participants.Velodrome Track Cyclist I therefore had to position myself to get the shot rather than position the participants to be in front of the camera. I was also faced with the problem of there being too few participants to actually film and in many cases there would be just one cyclist on screen at any time.

Sometimes you just have to work with what you’ve got

At the time I doubted that I would end up with anything that would be interesting as the cyclists passed me in single file as they moved around the Velodrome, sometimes with 20 to 40 seconds between each rider or circuit, time enough to turn the camera off between shots. I had no choice but to work with what I had and produced the best edits I could from the footage, which even I knew was just not that exciting. To prove my theory I put these video edits up for critique and sure enough the feedback was not positive. A change of music and a switch to Black and White visuals just did not get over the problem of just how boring it is to watch 6 cyclists riding in single file around a track.

Post Production Video Editing – being Creative?

Creativity born out of necessity! I guess my thought processes were ‘How can I make just 6 cyclists appear to fill the screen’ and the answer came to me. I would layer the footage to double or even triple the number of cyclists on screen. Initially I tried matching the movements of the riders so that they were all going in the same direction and then I discovered that by crossing the riders over each other the lines on the track created an interesting pattern on screen, from this I went back and changed the layered video tracks to include more of this crossing over. Blending, the option I would normally have chosen would have been ‘screen or overlay’ but it was such a dull day filming that I felt colour was required so I opted for ‘Vivid Light’. Now when the riders cross over each other you see a burst of colour.

Taking creativity to the next level

Although the new video was a good improvement on the original video edits I decided to see if I could take this idea forward and add a new element to the final design. I’ve always had an interest in Montage and then I thought of one my favourite films ‘Grand Prix 1966, John Frankenheimer’ with the Montage visuals created by Saul Bass, the story is not as important as the visuals but there are parallels with my video. For example, it’s shot on a race track with cars circling in single file except when overtaking. The directors solution was to use Montage to show more cars on screen and to use a layering effect to show cars at different points on the track appear to be side by side and even crossing these visuals over to great effect. I’ve researched the internet for an example and although there’s no example of this effect on YouTube or anywhere else for that matter, but there is the Movie Tralier for the film, which shows some of the Saul Bass montage effects being used.

I’d already experimented with this technique on previous projects but without much success as the subjects I had to work with at the time did not fit with this technique, but maybe this one would.

The Montage video how it was done

First of all this is a Triptych design I chose this as the videos I was using had height but little width as they were mainly of single cyclists on a track. I didn’t want to rescale the videos to fit the frame so I switched to After Effects to use it’s Masking features to mask out the unwanted video. The first stage was to design the frame for the Triptych which is easy enough using a ‘Solid Object’ and adjust scale and positioning this on screen to create 3 equal sections.

Then it was time to decide on the footage to use and positioning. Another one of those creative ideas came to me when I decided to use the footage taken using the GoPro as the central video for the entire edit. My thoughts on this were that this would provide a continuous image throughout the video linking each piece together for the entire duration of the video. I decided to start the video from the point when the cyclist repositions himself to the middle of the track to follow the rider fitted with the GoPro camera. So the image start on the left of the screen and move to the centre in the opening few seconds and then remains there for the video. As I mentioned I did this using masks and keying in the movement as the video moves from the left to the centre. For the other videos I used the same technique sometimes adjusting the mask over 2 sections of the screen. Some of the footage was already colour graded but the GoPro footage was still in its raw state. I’ve been working with toning on my Photography work recently and decided to use this technique for the GoPro footage by adjusting the lows, mids and high tones to match green, brown and orange.

The footage of the single rider storming around the track at high speed I just had to use for the start and end of the video, I love the very low angle from which it is taken and the fixed focus, which seems to offer clarity yet the rider appears to appear in the distance unfocused  and approach at high speed. This blurring effect along with a change in the duration settings adds to the effect of the riders speed.

I then ditched all the music I had lined up for this project and went back onto the internet to find others, an exhaustive task requiring hours of listening to unsuitable music to find a single track that would work.

Time to stop adding

The video is just 1 minute long, which I would normally have decided is not long enough. I wanted to see more of this cycling action on screen, but I decided not to add more footage – leave them wanting more.

EMP – Girls Track Cycling Training Event

Track Cycling Training Video – Final Edit

Another opportunity to film track cycling training at the Bournemouth Velodrome, this event was organised by the Free Your Fitness Project specifically to introduce girls to track cycling.

My brief was to film the event itself as much as the cyclists using the track as the organisers expected a large attendance of both cyclists their friends and family. Unfortunately the weather was not at its best, which meant only six riders attended and were in fact outnumbered by the organisation staff on the day. I therefore had to change tactics and concentrate much more on the coaching and the cyclists as they ride around the track.

For the majority of the filming I used my Canon 60D attached to the spider camera rig, capturing the footage hand held, which works really well when filming actions and sports sequences as it allows you to follow the movement much easier than using a tripod.

I made use of the GoPro again but this time with not the same level of success. I suspect the bikes being used on the day were more effected by the tracks surface or the riders lesser weight had some effect as the footage was much less steady and therefore mainly unusable due to the vibrations.

I created several edits from the days footage and asked my peers to provide feedback, much of which was negative to quote ‘boring’ ‘music too slow’ and so on. I then remembered how I had used overlaying video tracks as an experiment for the specialist project. Although I was at the time not convinced by using this technique I thought it would have greater appeal when used for this video as it would create the idea that more cyclist were on the track at any time than there actually was. I did this by layering up the video tracks and getting the riders to appear to be racing ghosts or having riders cross over each other making the screen more busy. In many ways like the old film Grand Prix which used this and a montage effect to great effect. I particularly like the colours created by my choice of blending options, normally I would have used the Normal option but Vivid Light worked better to bring out the crossing over colours of the tracks and the colours in the riders clothes. I was tempted to over grade the final sequence but instead settled for an adjustment using curves to just bring out the colours a little more to get over the greyness of the day with the Sun hidden by thick cloud.

The response to this edit was much more favourable particularly after changing the music as well to tie in with the new editing approach.

On the whole I agree now with my peers that this is a much better edit than my earlier efforts which struggled to get over the problem of having so few riders at the event with the knock-on effect of having the riders riding around the track in single file each taking over 20 seconds to pass in front of the camera.

While at the venue I took the opportunity to take several photographs as I’d noticed that I hadn’t done this one previous occasions only for people to request photos of the training sessions or screen grabs from the videos for their use in presentations and advertising/marketing.

How to organise your Film Titles/Credits

We were having problems deciding the best practice for adding titles and credits to our films. Some of our films were of very short duration and so adding extensive credits did not make sense. Therefore in the final edits and for most cases we decided not to add any credits in the actual videos but to just add them into the more information section in YouTube. However I did find this while researching for guidelines on how to structure opening and end credits for short films – it’s from a forum so its un-attributed but my personal thankyou to the guys that contributed to this and that posted this up.

I thought I’d post this guide for how credits are conventionally structured. A great way to put a professional polish on your film is to do as the pros do. And so…


The order of credits is determined by guild rules — SAG, the DGA, WGA and other unions. the list that follows is for opening credits.

The order in which credits are billed generally follows their importance to the film, just not linearly. First is usually the motion picture company, followed by the producer, then the ‘a film by’ credit. Then we see the Title followed by the cast. from there we reverse gears on the whole “order of importance” guideline and work backwards to the director…

if the writer and director are the same person, or the director was also a producer, hold his earlier credit and pair it with the more prestigious one (in this case “director”). so you would place “Written and Directed by” or “Produced and Directed by” or “Edited and Directed by” where the Director’s credit goes. if your Dp was also your editor, you’d have “Editor and Director of Photography…” falling in the position where the DP credit goes. etcetera.


Closing credits do not have any hard and fast rules that dictate how they need to be ordered. But there are conventions that have been established. If you intend to have no opening credits (something George Lucas left the DGA over) you basically put the Director, Writer and Producer credits first, then go down the line for the closing credits:

special consideration is given for “name” actors, often they are credited just before the title comes up. and again, you have a lot of wiggle room with closing credits. some films credit the entire cast first, before the director. you have options here.

if you have an Animated Production Company Logo, place that at the very beginning, before your credits. it’s the first thing we see. some studios/production companies will tag the logo on at the very end too.


Now, it’s important to note that on a short film, many of the roles you see above were handled by one person. I’ve been to a few film festivals and there is nothing more likely to induce a collective groan, and lose a few fans in the process, than a tedious string of credits on a five minute film… especially if the same names keep popping up. and I’ll tell you why. at festivals, shorts are programmed in blocks of 90 to 120 minutes. no one in the audience cares who did what. so waiting through two minutes of white test scrolling against black is pretty miserable for everyone. it also does a disservice to your fellow filmmaker. shorts blocks thrive on momentum. I’ve seen people leave the theater because of long credits. in particular, I sat through a 22 minute film followed by 6 minutes of very detailed credits. HALF the theater left before my film screened. half !!!

The best advice I can give here is that if you were the writer, director, producer, cinematographer and editor… just go with the most important titles (in this case… “written and directed by…”, dropping any credit for your editing or cinematography. Or maybe “a film by…” is enough. Didn’t have a casting director and held scheduled the auditions yourself? skip it. And even if you had a crew of 20-30 people, move through those credits as quickly as possible. When you are watching a short film, a minute worth of credits feels like an eternity.

Video Editing – Surfing Shot List

I always review my video clips using a VLC playlist before deciding on what to include or discard before importing into Premier Pro. This way I can review all the clips in sequence and make notes on, for example; the content, the type of shot, quality and of course whether to use or not.

The 3 images show how I approach this and as you can see there are over a 100 video clips and these are just from my camera – Aleks took almost as many so some form of shot list decision making must be made before actually starting the editing process.

The shot list of 100 was reduce down to a more manageable 41 using this process, the final decision to use these clips will be made in Premier’s clip viewer, although some I’ve starred as must use so I would start with these clips first.

Video Editing – Importing to a Bin in Premier Pro

As I am in the process of starting the final video editing for this project I plan to use a Bin (Folder) to group video clips together in one place. For example all the Surfing shots in the Surfing Bin and all the Judo clips in the Judo Bin and so for the rest of the video clips.

My Preferred Video Editing Style

I personally like the look of wide-screen video layouts with bars top and bottom. It creates the illusion of a very wide angle, when in fact the image is actually a standard 16:9 wide-screen format made narrow with the addition of black bars, which I created using titles and the rectangle tool.

I also have a preference for Black & White or desaturation/bleaching effects, which I created using curves rather than the Black & White preset, I also like to enhance the Black using the Deep Black preset.

Having spent a considerable amount of time creating the previous idents we decided to abandon them and create a different version as above.

Researching on the internet for idents in common use we identified several possibilities that had elements that we liked and that could be incorporated into our design.

badrobot lionsgateThese in fact turned out to be Film Company idents, Lionsgate and Bad Robot, for Lionsgate it was the mainly the font and the vignette around the clouds which focused your attention towards the text. The Bad Robot influenced our choice of soundtrack for the channel idents. When you listen to the Bad Robot titles towards the end they actually say ‘Bad Robot’

The image we chose came from one of the photographs Aleks took during the filming for the Surfing video. I processed this image in Lightroom 4.3 first by darkening the image by reducing the exposure by 1 stop and then adding a vignette, which I adjusted to centre around the figures in silhouette facing out to sea. Switching to Premier Pro CS5 I imported the modified image set the time line to be 15 seconds long. Then using Video Transform I set the Scale to create a zoom out effect over 50% of the sequence time line, with the image centered on screen.

We then set about researching the font to use for the titles, which seemed to take forever, trying lots of different fonts including film fonts for example ‘Blade Runner,’  ‘Goldeneye’ and ‘Aliens Vs Predator’ none seemed to fit. In the end the default fonts available in Premier’s Titling app had the prefect font ‘Myriad Pro condensed’, which turned out to be perfect for our needs. The only changes I made was to change colours and add a gradient so that the top of the titles were lighter than the bottom half.


This is where the ‘Bad Robot’ idents influence our design choice, having decided to announce the channel name I recorded Aleks announcing ‘Sports Edge’ into Audacity to which I added a slight change in both Pitch and Tempo before exporting as an Mp3 file.

I imported the voice track to which I then added a copyright free ambient sound. The final channel idents sequence was then exported as an mp4 file ready to be added to our video edits.

Why an ident? all TV channels have one it helps people to distinguish one channel from another but it also serves as a form of Branding. While researching idents I actually came across a website that lists the majority of both current and past channel idents used on the UK Networks – this can be found at this link Ident Gallery.

After a fairly intensive production meeting we agreed that we should create a Brand for our YouTube Channel and create a style for our videos. While Aleksandra would create the Brand and style for our Facebook Page I would work on the YouTube Channel. I created a selection of Idents for our videos, which would used for the opening credits for all the videos we would create from this point forward.

How did I make these identsae-idents

The image is a screen capture from the footage we took using the GoPro mounted on a surfboard. I then adjusted the image in Lightroom 4.3 to create a silhouette of the surfer. I then masked the surfer and adjusted the vibrancy saturation and clarity of the background to enhance the sky. The difference in colours between the images was created by using split toning and by adjusting the hues.

I then imported these images into After Effects for further manipulation and to add text, the final results were then rendered as H.264 codec video clips ready to be imported into Premiere Pro as title sequences.

I’ve added a temporary soundtrack to each but these will be unlinked and discarded ready to be replaced by the actual video soundtrack.

After another production meeting just a few days later we decided to design a totally new channel ident as non of the idents created seem to fit the concept. So after creating the ident below we abandoned this design for another which is described in the following Blog entry.

The only way to get visitors to your website or to watch your video is to make sure you get the basics right first and then go on to develop a strategy to increase traffic.

What are the Basic’s of Marketing YouTube Channel?

  1. Keywords in the Video’s Titles
  2. Links to the Video – Blog about your video and link to it from as many websites as you can.
  3. Subscribers – get people to subscribe to your YouTube Channel

EMP (RESEARCH) – Canon Picture Styles and GoPro

What are Canon Picture Styles?Canon Picture Styles

Looking through the menu for your Canon Camera (In Manual Mode is best) you’ll find the menu heading ‘Picture Style’.

Picture Styles set among other things the dynamic range for your pictures and videos. Some are obvious in what they do or what they are for, for example Portrait, Landscape and Monochrome. Then we can see there are 3 labelled User Def 1, User Def 2 and User Def  3 and these can be modified by the user. When I say modified you are able to upload Picture Styles using the EOS Utility Software that came with your camera. (NB: If you’ve upgraded your MAC to Mountain Lion this does not work install the upgraded utility software first) Refer to your camera manual for the process for installing new picture styles or this site has a good guide EOS Network.

Canon Picture Styles are useful for example when you want to create a look in your videos without having to colour grade in post production as it’s all done in the camera. This is really of benefit when you are in a hurry to upload your latest creation to YouTube or get it in front of a client in a rush. While editing in your camera is generally not advised sometimes it’s more important to get the video online as quickly as possible an example would be for a News article.

Technicolor Cinestyle

Using this picture style gives you a flat image but with a wide dynamic range this is most like shooting your video in RAW and is the most compatible between different Canon camera so if for example you had a 600D and a 60D the footage should be fairly close from both camera using this picture style.

Personally this is not my favourite option, it’s dynamic range maybe the best but there’s no warmth in the video it’s too flat. Also due to the dark image in the Liveview display it’s very hard to get good focussing, particularly for low light scenes.

Flaat_10 & Flaat_11 Picture Styles

I’m new to these picture styles but on first use I’m quite pleased by the vivid colours these produce although again not the best option for low light conditions.

I used this picture style for the first time on Monday 4th March 2013 for the filming of the RELAYS Training session at Winton College. The colours looked great but the footage itself was not the best and low light levels meant the footage was grainy if colourful.I’m looking forward to using these picture styles outside in good lighting as I’m sure this is where they will perform at their best.

We also fitted one of the trainees with the GoPro using the headstrap. Although it worked the footage again was not very usable as the sports being filmed required the participants to look down so we have lots of footage of the floor of the gym and a low flying ball. This is an ongoing issue with using the GoPro you never know what you are going to get until your upload the footage to the computer. Sometimes it’s just stunning but most of the time it’s unusable. Solutions – using the LCD back helps to setup the shot and fixing the GoPro to something that does not move around to much really helps.

Project Progress Meeting

Meeting with SportBU today to discuss the progress of the project so far and to develop a plan for carrying the project forward.

It was generally felt that progress so far was better than expected, particularly when considered against the problems with poor/cold weather for the outside activities and also the effects this had on reducing the numbers attending or the complete cancellation of some of the activities for Health and Safety reasons.

We agreed on an action plan to film additional sports and to re-visit some other sports activities to film extra footage/interviews depending on specific requirements for the final videos. These include Golf and Cycling.

I also agreed to film a women’s only track cycling event on Saturday the 9th March at the Bournemouth Velodrome. I have been asked to record the event as much as the actual sport.

The target now is to produce 2 videos for the client to be delivered by mid April, 1 video to be very short covering as many sports in as short a time as possible and the other longer and going into greater depth. Logos and End Credit titles to be designed and added to these videos.

The target audience for these videos are the member’s of similar schemes across the country and stakeholders including Sport England and the Lottery Fund.

Myself and Aleksandra are in a good position now with several Sports activities filmed and short edits created and uploaded to the YouTube Channel, which has now been officially renamed as ‘Sport Edge Video Productions’. But this was most definitely not the case just a few short weeks ago with every Sport activity we had scheduled to film either being cancelled because of lack of participants or permissions not granted to film even though we had been assured they had been.vlc-00044th

Filming Sport is something we’ve not really covered specifically at University and so this has become a learning process, developing techniques and creative ideas for shots as we film. The filming techniques and processes that we have developed over the years at University have definitely prepared us for this type of work. Although the usual in depth pre-production processes that we go through to create short films and documentaries, that is scripts, storyboarding and shots lists do not really work for this type of project. We managed to put together some ideas of the sort of shots we wanted to capture based on Sports coverage from the London Olympics 2012 and some recent research gained from on-line videos. Essentially though it’s a case of trying to identify key images and being in the right place to capture the action as it happens.

As we have progressed it has become easier, our recent filming experience helps us to decide where to position ourselves to film and indeed we have begun to take greater control of the sequences that we capture by directing the action. We are now in the position to say that we have learnt how to direct live action sequences, quite a good thing to be able to put on your CV.

Golf – Filming

The most recent planned filming session was Golf instruction at the Iford Golf Center in Christchurch. The Golf professionals were on hand to give instruction to a large group of Bournemouth University students who were being taught at the driving range the basics of addressing the ball and driving using a 6 iron.Golf

Being a lapsed golfer myself I had a good idea of what to expect and so I already had several ideas of what I wanted to film and what I didn’t. What I wanted was close-ups of the ball being hit and mid-shots of the students swinging the club. The camera rig has become my essential tool for these projects and it was this, which I turned to again, using it for the majority of the shots. For health and safety reasons as much as for creative reasons I used my 50mm to 250mm zoom lens for the close up shots, this way I could get close to the action without putting myself in a position where I could be hit by a club or a randomly directed ball.Canon 60D Camera Rig

Over the weeks I’ve come to realise that in order to get good sports shots you need to get the camera position as low as possible, aesthetically the footage obtained is more pleasing and appears to have the benefit of being able to position the viewer more into the action.  Why does this have this effect? Personally I think by getting the camera low we add to the sportsman’s significance on the screen, they appear to dominate the screen and therefore focus the viewer’s attention on them and the action, for example the impact of club on ball.

With the close-ups completed I turned to the mid shots and for this I reverted back to the faithful 50mm prime lens. I’ve mentioned before how good this lens is the quality of image is excellent. I encountered no real difficulties getting these shots but I also realised they were not that interesting so I didn’t spend too much time on these, capturing just a few minutes of footage from a number of positions and of different students. Remembering the principle that people like to see themselves on screen and so these people would therefore be potential subscribers to the YouTube Channel and sharing the videos via Social Networking.

Golf – Editing the footage

I went in a totally different direction with what I had originally intended to do for this edit. I noticed when using Time Remapping to produce a slow motion sequence that the sound of the club hitting the ball changed in pitch and became almost musical in tone. From this I had the idea to create a sound driven edit in effect a music video. To get the sounds I changed the duration of each clip and added several cuts together until I had a 40 second video of sounds to which I added a base music soundtrack. I then colour graded the video footage to balance out the jarring visual changes caused by the rapidly changing short edits and the changes in exposure to the visuals by first de-saturating and then by adding a sepia tint.

I’m quite pleased by the outcome of this edit and the response it gets, which have generally been positive and one of surprise as this is not the sort of video people generally expect from me.

Problems and solutions

Apart from the obvious Health and Safety issues by filming in a location with people swinging steel golf clubs and the odd errant ball there were not too many problems for this sessions filming. However without the Zoom lenses getting the shots would have not been possible as would not having the camera rig. We could have got the low level shots hand held but not with the stability of having the camera securely mounted. For example a tripod would not have been as successful in this application, although we had tripods with us, as they do not go down to the low levels required.

Sports Filming, Track Cycling – Bournemouth Velodrome

This was one of those sports that had been cancelled on us for bad weather reasons on two previous occasions, so we were particularly looking forward to finally get the opportunity to film this sport. We would be filming cycling in a location where we would be able to control some aspects of the action. This meant we were expecting to be able to use the GoPro for some of the shots and direct the cyclists actions and track positions to get the best shots from the DSLR’s. Unfortunately the weather still played its part, very cold conditions on the day dissuaded many of the cyclists from attending and in fact we only had three cyclists but we still managed to get the shots we wanted.GoPro Surf

For this filming session I had already decided on a number of shots I wanted, some fairly standard shots of the cycles using the Velodrome but also some shots, which would not be possible without the assistance of the riders in effect staging some shots. One shot in particular would be of a cycle passing within a few centimeters of the camera lens and at speed crossing the start/finish line. I created this by using my now almost indispensable camera rig and adjusted to be just a few centimeters off the ground and from the start/finish line. The other key shots in my mind would be created using the GoPro attached to a cycle. These key shots included one cyclist catching up/passing another with the GoPro forward mounted to catch these maneuvers. Another key shot with the GoPro facing to the rear would be of a cyclist catching another cyclist and preparing to pass and finally another shot of just the face of a cyclist showing the effort in involved in starting the bike moving with just its single gear.

Editing – CyclingBournemouth Velodrome 1

We just needed a short edit at this stage for the client to use so I took the key shots from the GoPro footage and added in the footage from the DSLR’s, which included some tracking shots as the cycles followed the steep banking of the Velodrome. I then colour graded the video footage to make it a bit warmer by introducing some browns and oranges. I also added a slight grain effect not enough to affect the clarity too much but to give the footage that newsreel type look.

Problems and Solutions


Filming on the day went well, apart from the freezing conditions and the actual lack in numbers of cyclists we did manage to get all the shots we wanted. We had to stage many of the shots due to there only being three cyclists and I’m hoping we can go back at some point when there are more cyclists to get some of the shots I decided I’d like to get, especially now that I have some experience of filming this sport. The GoPro was difficult to fit on the bikes tubular frame primarily due to the oversize nature of the bike frame itself. I suspect the bike mounting kit was designed for the average bike not the specialist machines professional/enthusiast track cyclists’ use. The only way around this was to mount the GoPro on less obvious frame bars and play with the angles until we got the shots we were after. What was great was the addition of the LCD back, which helped immensely when setting up, as the difference in mounting angle between a great shot and one, which missed completely, was marginal. It was a dull day so apertures tended to be wide and so depth of field shallow. Great for contemporary ideas on what is a Cinematic effect but so easy for the shot to go out of focus, the only solution here is to get the focus right and repetition of the action until it was right.

Another cold winters evening filming at the Bournemouth Athletics Stadium. For this video shoot I decided that I would use the camera rig again rather than a tripod mainly due to the success of using it for the Surfing video shoot.Athletics Track Coaching Session

This was a live shoot, which again meant unscripted and no storyboards to work from even a shot list was not possible for this session as this was a last minute decision to film after getting confirmation of session being run and a break in the weather.

I also intended to use the GoPro if opportunity presented itself however this proved impossible as both batteries in the kit were uncharged out of the store and there was no opportunity to charge in the hour from receiving the kit and filming. This is something which I will in future make sure does not happen again, although it does seem that the batteries lose their charge even when not in use, so it appears the cameras draw power even when the camera has been turned off.Athletics Track depth of field

Camera Techniques

I’ve researched several techniques that professionals use to film sports action and the common idea that all seem to agree with is to keep the camera low to the action. With this in mind I spent much of the evening kneeling low to the ground with the camera rig actually positioned on the ground with the legs/grips adjusted to achieve the best shot angles.

  • GoPro battery discharged – no real solution to this ither than to make sure the batteries are fully charged before use, I would also suggest that the battery is removed from the camera when not in use.
  • Filming in cold weather – the camera started to mist over due to the very cold conditions. The only solution here is to either not film in such conditions or carry a cloth to keep the lens and viewfinder clear. I certainly would not recommend changing lenses in these conditions or the mirror may become fogged or worse condensation inside the electronics of the camera itself.

Researching Social Media for Marketing

For this project we are planning to use the power of Social Media to organise and market the Sports Edge YouTube Channel. We’ve created a Group Page for sharing information and ideas, this way even when the team are not able to be together we are still able to communicate our ideas and planning through the Group Pages. We also created a Facebook Page so that we could market the project on Social Networks, this would be what Aleksandra would work on.

I started this project by setting up a online Gantter Chart as I’d done for all my previous projects one of the benefits of using this Gantter Chart service is that it is free to use and you can share the project online by inviting users by email to join. But after a few weeks I abandoned this idea of using the Ganttner Chart as the main source of planning for our project as one after the other the prearranged filming sessions were cancelled on us.

I then thought that the best way going forward would be to keep this Gantter Chart to use as an outline of the project, noting the important deadlines and filming dates but also thought to replace this and use some form of Diary sharing as our main project planning resource.

After some research I thought about using Calendar on my Mac which automatically syncs between all my devices but not between different users I then remembered that Facebook provides a similar offering but using its Events management services.

The key benefit to using Facebook Events was that it allows me to share this information online to all users in our group and also with other users who would also need to know, which events we would be attending so that they could arrange or confirm arrangements were in place for us to film.

Social Media – Facebook Events for Project Planning

While conducting research on using Facebook to market the YouTube channel I realised we could use Facebook Events to organise the days that we are filming, add descriptions which include the equipment that we plan to use and of course by adding location details the events location including maps and directions are available to us on our mobile phones. Technically we will have all the information we will need to get to a venue and a full description of what is planned to our mobile phones. Extending on this idea further it should be possible to add specific information for example a shot list.

For the organisation of location filming this tool is significantly more successful at organising our project than a typical Ganttner project chart would be. Although the Gantt chart has its place it just does not have the all encompassing communications tools that Facebook Events has. By this I mean its ability to communicate with portable devices/mobile phones/tablets.

This is such a good idea that I cannot think of why we have not done this before for previous projects.
